Unlock refers to different modules, each explained below in detail. This will include one or more of the services listed below.

SP-Lock
The 'SP-Lock' (Service Provider Lock) prevents you from using your handset with a different service provider other than the one you originally purchased it from. Some mobile phones are designed to use a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card, or microchip that stores subscriber data. The SIM card is issued by a carrier and provides cell service by activating any phone into which it is inserted. A locked phone, however, will only recognize a SIM card from a particular carrier. If the mobile phone is unlocked, it will recognize a SIM card from any carrier. The "lock" is a software setting that keeps the mobile phone "loyal" to one carrier. The most obvious reason for having your phone unlocked is so that you can use another provider's services. Maybe it is because your service provider is too expensive or maybe it is just because they have poor coverage where you live. The second likely reason to have your phone unlocked is so that you can temporarily use another provider's SIM card in your phone. This might be because you are roaming overseas and don't want to pay high roaming fees for the two weeks you are away and it would be a lot cheaper to buy a pre-paid SIM and airtime.
